Sr. Elizabeth

Sr Elizabeth will be 90 on 28th November 2004.  She came to Alton in 1938 with the first group of French sisters who accompanied Rev. Mother Madeleine and so was instrumental in the starting of the school.  A young sister of 24, she knew hardly any  English and along with the others she worked hard to get the house in order so that the school could start.

Her job has always been connected with the welfare of the pupils and especially the boarders.  Her various jobs included mending, cooking, gardening, school uniform, etc. She has always had a special gift in relationships and hospitality and is still active in these respects today.

Sr. Sylvette Marie aka Mother Mary of the the Assumption aka fondly as Sumpy.

Celebrating her 80th birthday this year, she was born on 1st January 1924.  She came to Alton at the beginning of the Fifties and knew no English.  She began by helping with the children while learning English and went on to teach Art, French and R.S., and was Head of the School for some years. A keen photographer she has built up a good record through photos and films.  She has a real love of children and enjoyed their company out of school hours in several ways - school trips and holidays - boarders - guides, etc. She loved being a form mistress.

Sr. Sylvette Marie was a firm favourite with the teenagers - she never forgot her own schoolgirl years and so was able to easily identify with the girls she taught, many of whom are still in touch with her today.
